Nome
Location:
Nome was built along the Bering Sea, on the south coast of the
Seward Peninsula, facing Norton Sound. It lies 539 air miles
northwest of Anchorage, a 75-minute flight. It lies 102 miles
south of the Arctic Circle, and 161 miles east of Russia. It
lies at approximately 64d 30m N Latitude, 165d 25m W Longitude.
(Sec. 26, T011S, R034W, Kateel River Meridian.) Nome is located
in the Cape Nome Recording District. The area encompasses 12.5
sq. miles of land and 9.1 sq. miles of water.

Iditarod Sled Dog Race -
The world longest sled dog race, starts on Anchorage and
ends in Nome.
Iditarod Dart Tournament - A three day tournament.

Bering Sea Ice Golf Classic - A 6-hole course is made
and played on the Bering Sea.
Nome Council 200 Sled Dog Race - A 200 mile race with
a purse of $10,000
Norman
Vaughan Serum Run
The Serum 25 Run is a long distance dog mushing
expedition that commemorates the courageous effort and
success of the original Serum Runners, who were responsible
for bringing the life saving diphtheria serum to Nome
in 1925. Col Norman Vaughan, Serum 25 Run leader, along
with dog mushers and supporting snow machiners, will travel
the same route taken by the original Serum Runners from
Nenana to Nome. In addition, Colonel Vaughan, dog mushers
and snow machiners will speak to each village school along
the way to remember the original feat accomplished by
mostly Alaskan Native Mushers, and to inspire school age
children to "Dream Big and Dare to Fail". Villagers
will be reminded about the importance of getting inoculations
as part of continuing present day health care. |
